Amazing Central Otago

Rippon, the most beautiful vineyard in Otago, if not the worldWe have taken some time out to visit Central Otago in New Zealand recently. The region boasts not only world-class Pinot Noir, but also a landscape to die for. There is nothing like a Wine & Spring Ski trip to New Zealand.

Naturally we tasted as many wineries and Pinots as our tastebuds could handle so we can report back to Corkscore base about the top wines and wineries. You will receive a complete list in our next Style File. Our tasting notes have already been added to Corkscore.

In the meantime, there were a number of stunning examples of classy, well made Pinot Noir that you should definitely try. Check out Pisa Range Poplar Block Pinot Noir 2006, Valli Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir 2007 and Bald Hills Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2007.

A personal surprise for me was the textural beauty of the Pisa Range Pinot Gris 2007.

Méthode Traditionelle at Quartz ReefWe were also most impressed with our lodgings at Tiritiri Lodge in Wanaka. Hosts Stephanie and Denis provided the highest level of personalised service we ever experienced, combined with luxurious lodgings and views of Lake Wanaka to die for. They also arranged an amazing wine dinner with winemaker Grant Taylor from Valli Wines, sampling his entire range, including an experimental Vin Santo. We are currently negotiating with Tiritiri Lodge a special Otago Spring & Wine package exclusively for Corkscore members.

Also on our trip but less impressive were the results from our review of the wines in the Qantas Business Lounge. We have quite some comments there for the wine team at Qantas. If only they picked Corkscore Top Drops ;-)

Stay tuned - more details in our next newsletter.

How do the Top Drops get picked?

Our mission is to uncover unique artisan wines available at great value for money. To find the Top Drops we sieve through the Corkscore user reviews and create a first shortlist of highly rated wines. Then the Corkscore Wine Panel vets the list to filter out the most unique wines and eliminate any duds.

Finally, we discuss the shortlist with our merchant partners to find out which of the wines are actually available for sale. After all, it's pointless to recommend a wine, when only seven cases were ever made. We then negotiate with the merchant partner to give Corkscore members a good deal.

Our current merchant partner, the Ultimo Wine Centre, have a fabulous selection of fine wines available and can rustle up almost anything you guys have reviewed!

Corkscore’s Cellar Door Crawl in Hunter Valley.

The Hunter is the closest wine region to the Corkscore HQ. Our iPhones in hand, we recently went on a test tour not only to sound out the wine, but also to do a field test of the Corkscore iPhone app. When coverage got really bad we used offline email to send our tasting notes to Corkscore.

The Style File: Hunter Valley

The great news is that Hunter wines are very affordable - the best wines we found were under A$30.

Our Favourite

Best under A$30

Semillon

One of Australia's hallmark wine styles. Delicate, crisp lemon and citrus flavours when young. Toasty and rich when aged.

Semillon lovers should check out the Ultimo Wine Centre's current Tyrrell's Vat 1 vertical starting from 1993.

Shiraz

Not for the lovers of juicy sweet Barossa Shiraz, the Hunter Shiraz style is all about earth, leather, dust and spice.

"Wine Wisdom" Video

The Wine Wisdom series of the Sydney Morning Herald recently featured Corkscore in its latest video. It was great fun having the crew over to do the filming, particularly the part when we reviewed the Cullen Mangan.
