The wines in our Aventino Collection are a reflection of the old vine Tempranillo grapes from the extreme DO Ribera del Duero. Altitude, climactic conditions and soils combine to produce wines of character, with intense colors, aromas and flavors. The winemaking skills employed are designed to craft wines that vary in complexity, structure and approachability, while maintaining the unique characteristics of the native Tempranillo grape.
Alejandro Fernádez is a poster child for the rise and rise of the ‘New Spain’. A family breadwinner from the age of 13, he has gone on to become one of the greats of modern Spanish viticulture and a pioneer in both Ribera and with the Tempranillo grape. Pesquera was the first Estate he established and the one that launched his fame.
Our vineyards are made up 100% of the Tempranillo grape variety or Tinta Fina (as it’s known locally) and are located in Sotillo de la Ribera, a village of 500 inhabitants in the province of Burgos.
Situated in the northern part of the Ribera del Duero appellation, in the highest part of the Duero valley, the vineyards lie at 850 to 930 metres above sea level and are contained within a privileged enclave. The high altitude brings about sharp contrasts of temperature between day and night-time, with swings of over 15ºC, which enhance grape ripening during the day while the low night temperatures preserve good acidity.
The vineyard is the origin of our wines. Bodegas Portia owns 160 hectares in the area of Roa, Gumiel de Izán, Villanueva and Gumiel de Mercado, in the heart of Ribera del Duero. The winery has been built in concrete, wood, steel and glass. Its 12,500 square metres in total are spread over three floors in the form of a star whose three points correspond to the different areas of vinification, fermentation and ageing.
Established in 1927, the guiding philosophy of Protos at work is "Quality above all". For this reason, the whole process leading to the production of wine undergoes an in-depth analysis. The vineyards are controlled exhaustively by our technicians and experts throughout the growth cycle, yielding a production of the highest quality. This also gives them in-depth information about all the grapes to be used in our elaboration before they reach our facilities.
PSI is the brainchild of Peter Sisseck, founder of Dominio de Pingus. The idea is to utilise some neglected, but potentially great old assets, human and vinous, of Ribera del Deuro. In short, they are the old bush-vine holdings of the senior citizens of Ribera del Duero, old peasant guys in the main, who have been growing fruit to sell off for decades. In the main, despite the great age and quality of the vineyards, the resultant material and commercially realised wines have been uninspiring. In conjunction with Pablo Rubio (winemaker for Peter at Dominio de Pingus and Quinta Sardonia), Peter has re-fashioned the viticulture of these old vines, and rejuvenated the old guys’ relationship with their beloved gnarled old plots.
TEMPOS Vega Sicilia was set up in 1982 by the Álvarez family, its current owner, when it purchased the legendary winery of the Ribera del Duero. The other companies would be added down through the years.
Pingus was established in 1995 by Peter Sisseck, who had already made a name for himself as winemaker at Hacienda Monasterio. He located three separate plots, each containing very old vines of Tinto Fino, and established the winery. His aim was to produce "an unmistakably Spanish, terroir-driven wine... a garage wine."
Ébano Viñedos y Bodegas works hard in the selection of the grapes that come from its 43 hectares of vineyards.
With yields of 2.500 kg per hectare in the “low bush” vineyards and 4.000 kgs per hectare in the “trained on the wires” vineyards joined to the plants age make Ebano Viñedos and Bodegas obtain one of the best selections of grapes of the D.O. Ribera del Duero.
Valtravieso started out in 1985, when the first vines were planted experimentally on the lands of Piñel de Arriba, in the district of Valladolid, at the very heart of the Ribera del Duero region.
