On the outskirts of Elciego, close to the river Mayor, right at the beginning of the road to Laguardia, stands an extensive cellar complex built with stone masonry typical of the area. With 22,000 square meters, Bodegas Muriel is one of the hallmarks of wine in the area.
The vineyards are made up of more than eighty hectares of tempranillo, viura and malvasía grape. They are spread out over six plots in the Cantabrian mountain range: Samaniego, Leza, Elciego, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Laguardia and Abalos.
In selecting these plots, careful consideration was given to the habitat, microclimate and orientation, as well as the low yield of the vines with an average age of fifty years. This large area comprising the estate allows us to be self-sufficient using only premium quality grape.
he Vina Eguia winery and vineyards were established in 1973 in Elciego and purchased by Bodegas Muriel in 2010. Elciego is a historic village in the Rioja Alavesa, which borders the Spanish “Basque” region, and the language spoken there often includes Basque words, such as “Eguia” which means “truth.” The brand is symbolized by an open hand over the label, which is in the shape of an open book – analogous to putting one’s hand on a bible to swear to the truth of what one is saying.
