Billy Button Wines began its life in 2014, bursting onto the scene in all its colour and glory. These premium wines are the culmination of three factors: emerging region, varietal diversity and an inspired winemaking vision. Winemaker: Jo Marsh.
Situated in the Alpine Valleys GI, Feathertop was established by Kel Boynton in 1989. The 20 hectare vineyard in the Ovens Valley subregion near Bright was selected for its deep, red, well-drained soils, its terraced soil profile and sub-alpine climate. Originally known as Boynton’s of Bright, the wine range was rebranded as Feathertop Wines in 2005.
The majority of the 10,000 case production is sold through the Cellar Door situated on the Great Alpine Road in Porepunkah. The vineyard is planted to 19 different varieties: Prosecco, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Savagnin, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay, Vermentino, Fiano, Friulano, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Dornfelder, Durif, Tempranillo, Shiraz, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese and Nebbiolo.
The philosophy of Feathertop is to capture the true potential of the soil and climate of the region, expressed as wine. This is undertaken by the marriage of dedicated hands on viticultural practices and devoted winemaking. The vineyard is dry grown, hand pruned and handpicked to produce intense fruit in pristine condition. Winemaking practices aim to maximise fruit expression and create balanced wines with a sense of place.
The cellar door is open Friday – Sunday with extended hours on school and public holidays. Our Stone & Barrel Restaurant is open for lunch and private functions and our cellar door has a Providore for DIY produce platters. Local craft beer and coffee available. Our Summit Cru Wine club forms an integral part of the business and is the best way to receive priority access to our 22 varietals, consisting of 4 mixed cases per year.
High above the Ovens River, overlooking the sleepy township of Porepunkah, the family-owned Mayford Vineyard lies tucked away from view.
Nestled in a hidden valley, with unsurpassed views of Mount Buffalo, the shaley hillside plantings give rise to low yielding vines and wines of intensity and finesse.
For winemaker-vigneron couple, Eleana Anderson and Bryan Nicholson, the small range of Mayford Wines is the culmination of many years of toil together, which accounts for a large number of lost weekends and fishing opportunities.
The creation of limited quantities of handcrafted wines is underpinned by a unique site in the foothills of the Victorian Alps, sensitive vineyard management, traditional winemaking practices and the staunch support of family and friends.
The Ringer Reef vineyard is known locally for its Merlot grapes planted up on the hill over looking Porepunkah. With a softer style than other red grape varieties, Merlot's attractiveness lies in its subtleties. Ringer Reef aims to develop a style of wine that reflects full-flavoured quality fruit, integrated oak with soft acid and silky tannins.
