Apricus Hill, established in 1995, is the highest vineyard in Denmark, on Western Australia's south coast. At 750 feet above sea level and with panoramic views of the southern ocean the vineyard experiences a true maritime effect with cooling ocean breezes make it a true "cool climate" vineyard. This is a small family vineyard, creating small volumes of wine.
(previously called Matildas Estate) The origin of Rockcliffe was an 18 acre expanse of apple orchards set in the Eden-like paradise of Denmark, West Australia.
In the late 1980's, a local family acquired the property, christened it Matilda's Meadow and commenced the planting of dry grown vines.
In 2001 under the enthusiastic direction of new owner Steve Hall, Matilda’s Estate underwent a refurbishment of the Cellar Door, Art Gallery & Restaurant.
In 2007 the building of a brand new winery that can facilitate producing 50,000 cases of wine per year has signalled a new stage in the evolution of the brand and business.
Brenden Smith, Winemaker and former founding owner of West Cape Howe, encouraged his previous co winemaker Coby Ladwig to join the team at Rockcliffe. Luke Eckersley, previously with Forest Hill joined Rockcliffe in 2011. They bring a history of success, enthusiasm and an extensive range of skills to the winery.
This year Steve Hall, a geologist, renamed the winery “Rockcliffe” after the stretch of 100m high granite rock cliffs that dominate the eastern end of Denmark’s main bay. The same granite lies beneath the winery and gives distinctive characteristics to the wine.
