Located in the quaint village of Cara on the Dalmatian Island of Korcula, this small vineyard produces one of the most impressive white wines in Europe. The history of the Island of Korcula, the birthplace of the famous traveler, Marko Polo, goes back to Homeric times. The wine making tradition was brought to the Black Korkyra (as the Greeks used to call the island) by the Greeks over 3,000 years ago. Today this area produces the elite white wine of protected geographic origin.
There are a few cities and companies that have such a rich and glorious tradition in liqueur production like Zadar and Maraska. More than five centuries of experiences and tradition in production of liqueurs and alcoholic drinks have been joined into today's company. Maraska is a modern Croatian company with a long tradition in production and sale of alcohol drinks, which also has an opulent assortment of non alcoholic drinks of various types and flavours.
The stunning vineyard covered islands of South Croatia are the original home to California's Zinfandel! This wild but gentle red is made from 100% Plavac Mali (Pla-vatz Molly), Zinfandel's centuries old offspring. It is peppery with bright berry flavors and gentle dusty tannins. It's low alcohol and complexity make it unusually adept with a wide variety of food from salmon, to creamy cheeses, to spit fired lamb.
The name of the winery is actually Vinarjia Dinga? it is a interesting sort of co-op in that it is owned by the farmers who sell their fruit to the winery.
The family horticulturist company Vitis was formed in early 1986, marking the beginning of our operation. In 1993, the company changed its name to Zlatan Otok. Under this name, we continue to do our business. Our vineyards are located in the south area of the Hvar Island, where Plavac Mali is the predominant variety, and in the Podbiokova area in the Makarsko Vinogorje, where we planted a new vineyard in 2004, on the altitude between 30m and 400m above sea level. The vineyard lies under the Biokovo highlands. 650 000 vines grow there, on 75 ha of surfaces. Most of them are of the Plavac Mali variety. In addition, we also planted: Crljenak (Zinfandel), Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, while white grapes comprise mostly old varieties: Pošip, Žilavka, Dubrova?ka Malvazija, and also Chardonnay and Žuti Muškat (Yellow Muscat).
We are currently in the process of obtaining the Croatian Organic Certificate.
