Pond Paddock is a boutique family-owned vineyard located in the picturesque countryside of Martinborough, New Zealand. We produce quality hand-crafted wine made exclusively from our vineyard. In 1999, the original owners, Jeff Barber and Christine Barnett chose to develop the Pond Paddock vineyard in Te Muna Road, Martinborough, because of its long dry summers and cool nights as well as the soil structure of the Te Muna Terrace which is characterised by free draining sandy loam soils. Those characteristics combined with careful vineyard management has created the ideal conditions for the production of quality pinot noir. Between 2000 and 2013 they worked hard to create one of the best pinot noir vineyards in Martinborough. The name Pond Paddock was given to the block by locals years before they bought the property. There is a pond and stream at the back of the property against the hill and locals thought that this name acknowledged the past history of the land. As soon as we purchased the vineyard we became excited about continuing on the challenge of making the same quality wine that had been produced from this vineyard in past. We strongly believe that “the character of quality wine begins in the vineyard”. We put a great deal of effort into the management of our vineyard with the aim of producing the best possible fruit in an efficient and sustainable way. All of Pond Paddock's vineyard work is done by hand: pruning, bud rubbing, fruit thinning, leaf plucking and fruit harvesting. We currently have four different pinot noir clones and try to take no more than 2.5 ton of fruit per acre. We keep the plants in balance in order to have the best quality fruit for the production of a great wine. It's a major expense and very time consuming but absolutely necessary to ensure that only the highest quality fruit is used in the winemaking process.
