Alana Estate is a premium, boutique winery situated in Martinborough, New Zealand.
First established In 1993 the founding shareholders had a strong vision for the land on the north edge of the Martinborough Terrace. Almost 20 years later this dream is being realised beyond their original expectations.
Ata Rangi, meaning "dawn sky" or "new beginning" is a small New Zealand winery with a big reputation for serious Pinot Noir. Located at the southern end of the North Island, it is owned and managed by a family trio - Clive Paton, his wife Phyll and his sister Alison. Clive planted his first vines on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of the Martinborough village in 1980 as one of a handful of people who pioneered winegrowing in the area. Ata Rangi Pinot Noir is undoubtedly the flagship wine, and in 2010 was honoured with the inaugural Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa or "Grand Cru of New Zealand". With a skilled team in place, including dynamic winemaker Helen Masters, Clive now has more time to focus on his commitment to conservation and to the Ata Rangi alliance with Project Crimson.
We are a small, family-owned vineyard, making limited production hand-crafted wines from our low cropping single block vineyard.
We were drawn to the Te Muna valley. It’s a very special place. On the high alluvial terrace of Martinborough’s Huangarua river, its deep gravels, low rainfall, warm days and cool nights make it ideal for growing pinot noir -- we think it is amongst the best in the world, and that’s reflected in our wines.
Established in 2013, Botanic Vineyards is a small Martinborough vineyard set up by viticulturist and winemaker Christopher Reid.
Chris has a double degree in viticulture and wine science. His vintage experience includes Martinborough, Hawke's Bay, Nelson, Oregon and Burgundy.
Chris' experience had led him to produce elegant, perfumed and site-expressive pinot noir from his small, family-owned vineyard on the Martinborough Terrace. All work on the vineyard is carried out by hand, with an emphasis on managing pests and diseases with vineyard produced fertilisers and biological sprays.
The vineyard currently produces one barrel of pinot noir per year. New plantings in 2013 and 2014 will eventually see the total production up to 4 barrels per year.
More than 25 years of grape-growing has proven the Martinborough region to be one of the premium wine producing areas in New Zealand and looking to the future the challenge will be to continue to produce world class wines of the finest quality.
Burnt Spur is certainly achieving this from it’s 35 hectare single vineyard where the approach to the wine is to give the purest expression of the land where the vines are planted and from the climate the vines enjoy – giving a true sense of terroir.
Winemaker Paul Mason and his team are dedicated to the philosophy that ‘great wines are made in the vineyard’.
Be bold, be brave, be you, be free, just Be!
B.wine allows us to be all of these things. A boutique winery hiding out in Martinborough we produce wines for the love of nature and the culture of wine.
Here we combine our old world heritage with our love of the new to grow and make contemporary wines that express a very personal perspective of Martinborough and the Wairarapa.
One of only a few winemakers who make two vintages in two hemispheres each year, one in Switzerland and one in New Zealand. Our winemaking is rich with insight from both the old and new world, allowing us the freedom to paint distinctive pictures of each place. This along with our dedication to the natural world and careful selection of unique vineyards make these wines special, especially to us and a privilege to share.
We celebrate the distinctive nature of our region and the characteristics of a single vineyard in two exuberant and introspective wine tiers.
Cambridge Road Vineyard is a small, 5.5-acre estate in the esteemed Martinborough Terrace Appellation in the North Island of New Zealand.
We are the newest stewards of this vineyard, which was first planted in Pinot Noir and Syrah grapes in 1986 and was previously known as the Fraser Block. The vines are amongst the oldest in the country and we continue their management with love and pride.
Dry River vineyard was established in 1979 by Dr Neil and Dawn McCallum. With vines planted on the northern boundary of the Martinborough township, Dry River aptly describes the very arid, gravely and free-draining site. They produce wines of optimal phenolic ripeness that truly reflect the site and vineyard. Ben McNab, appointed Dry River winemaker in November 2022, is looking forward to building on its reputation as one of New Zealand’s most iconic pioneering wineries.
Julicher Estate (pronounced ‘U - li – ker’) is a family-owned boutique Martinborough winery focusing on the production of prestige quality wines with distinctive fruit flavours.
The company was founded 16 years ago by the late Wim Julicher when he planted the winery’s first vineyards on the Te Muna Terraces. Not afraid of new challenges, the Julicher family toiled away to establish their 20 hectares of vineyards from bare land. No mean feat!
The Te Muna terraces are recognised world-wide as some of the best terroir in New Zealand. The unique microclimate of Te Muna Road plus the free-draining alluvial gravel soils which are rich in minerals make this area ideal for the production of small parcel specialist wines.
Pinot Noir, one of the grapes that create the finest red wines in the world, is the type of red wine grape that I, Hiroyuki KUSUDA, like the best of all.
My dream is to produce a Pinot Noir that can be acknowledged at the highest level. In order to pursue that dream, I immigrated to New Zealand with my family in May 2001, where I believe has one of the greatest potentials to grow Pinot Noir. Please keep an eye on KUSUDA WINES Pinot Noir.
Lynfer Estate is a family owned boutique vineyard committed to producing wines of integrity.
The vineyard was established in 2000 with proven varieties and clones of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir vines. The 11 hectare site was carefully selected for its free draining stony silt loam soils, low annual rainfall, and the region's long summer months of warm days and cool nights - the hallmark for producing world class cool climate wines.
Edward and Marjory Leung have been wine enthusiasts for as long as they can remember, with a particular passion for Pinot Noir.
Ma Maison boutique winery is the expression of that passion, born out of the Leungs’ desire to share their love of Pinot Noir with others.
Edward moved to New Zealand from Hong Kong at the age of 19 to study dentistry in Dunedin, where he met and later married Marjory. After Edward completed his degree the couple moved to Hong Kong for four years, but returned to New Zealand in 1972. Marjory began her career in the banking industry at this point, while over the next 19 years Edward practiced as a dentist in Wainuiomata, Picton and England, before establishing his practice in Wellington.
The Margrain vineyard, planted in 1992, was born from the passion for fine wine, good food and the country lifestyle held by husband and wife owners Graham and Daryl Margrain. They were part of the second wave of wine enthusiasts who came to Martinborough to follow on from the success of the pioneer wineries that had established themselves some 10 years previously. Having developed a love for the regions wines they came to realise the importance of the local climate plus the effects of the now famous Martinborough soil terraces.
Winemaker Strat Canning came to them for their second production year and in 2016 worked his 21st vintage. His has been a key role in the development of both viticulture and wine style and is keen to ensure there is no barrier between vineyard and winery efforts.
Since their inception Margrain has quietly gained a reputation for producing a wide range of exceptional wines that exude both complexity and charm. The line-up has only become more eclectic over the years.
Free-draining soils, hot summers and long, dry autumns make Martinborough the perfect region for growing traditional cool-climate wines. Founded in 1980, Martinborough Vineyard was a trailblazer in the region and the first to plant the variety for which the region is best known, Pinot Noir. We now lay claim to the oldest Pinot Noir vines in the district.
These plantings were the visionary response by a small group of enthusiastic investors led by Derek Milne, to a 1978 DSIR survey that revealed that the closest New Zealand climatic analog to Burgundy (the French home of Pinot Noir) was to be found in the small rain shadow centred on the township of Martinborough. Since our first vintage was released by pharmacist-turned-winemaker and original investor Russell Schultz in 1984, we have consistently produced world-class wines from our home block, Martinborough Terraces blocks and, more recently, our Burnt Spur vineyards.
Palliser Estate was founded in 1984 when we planted our first vines. Named after the dramatic Palliser
Bay on the Wairarapa coast and its namesake Admiral Sir Hugh Palliser. Colleague and patron of
Captain James Cook, Palliser was a brave visionary and distinguished leader. The name firmly
connects us to our land, it honours our region and the pioneering spirit upon which New Zealand is
founded. Our iconic crest reflects this. Inspired by the crest of Palliser’s Family, the Griffin - half Eagle,
half Lion - is a symbol of boldness, intelligence and courage.
Pond Paddock is a boutique family-owned vineyard located in the picturesque countryside of Martinborough, New Zealand. We produce quality hand-crafted wine made exclusively from our vineyard.
In 1999, the original owners, Jeff Barber and Christine Barnett chose to develop the Pond Paddock vineyard in Te Muna Road, Martinborough, because of its long dry summers and cool nights as well as the soil structure of the Te Muna Terrace which is characterised by free draining sandy loam soils. Those characteristics combined with careful vineyard management has created the ideal conditions for the production of quality pinot noir.
Between 2000 and 2013 they worked hard to create one of the best pinot noir vineyards in Martinborough.
The name Pond Paddock was given to the block by locals years before they bought the property. There is a pond and stream at the back of the property against the hill and locals thought that this name acknowledged the past history of the land.
As soon as we purchased the vineyard we became excited about continuing on the challenge of making the same quality wine that had been produced from this vineyard in past.
We strongly believe that “the character of quality wine begins in the vineyard”. We put a great deal of effort into the management of our vineyard with the aim of producing the best possible fruit in an efficient and sustainable way. All of Pond Paddock's vineyard work is done by hand: pruning, bud rubbing, fruit thinning, leaf plucking and fruit harvesting.
We currently have four different pinot noir clones and try to take no more than 2.5 ton of fruit per acre. We keep the plants in balance in order to have the best quality fruit for the production of a great wine. It's a major expense and very time consuming but absolutely necessary to ensure that only the highest quality fruit is used in the winemaking process.
The Wairarapa offers a unique blend of topography, ancient geolgy and climate to produce world class Burgundian style Pinot Noir. This was the reason for us to set up our vineyard in Martinborough where New Zealand's Pinot Noir history began with the first vines being planted in the region in 1883.
Apart from our two flagship Pinot Noirs ‘Marion’s Vineyard’ and ‘Block B’ we produce a savoury Estate Pinot Noir, an elegant and fresh Sauvignon Blanc, a beautiful silky European style Rosé, our intriguing bright and aromatic Tribianco cuvée and a luscious Late Harvest Dolce.
SCHUBERT'S philosophy is to craft wines of uncompromising quality that would stand out alongside the finest in the world. 14 hectares of wines are closely planted in the traditional, European style and the unique climate produces low yields. As a result they have been quick to capture the attention of connoisseurs and critics alike for their alluring, internationally award winning wines of outstanding character, complexity, balance and grace.
"tee-kigh-runga" - where the soil is rich and the food is plentiful, Te Kairanga is one of Martinborough's founding vineyards established over 20 years ago. In keeping with the pioneering spirit surrounding the vineyard, a number of Te Kairanga wines have hailed from Martinborough's history and that of its inhabitants dating back to 1879. Our own John Martin Reserve Pinot Noir, known and loved by many, is notably named after the founding
father of Martinborough - John Martin himself. Likewise the Pinot Runholder is aptly named as a tribute to the runholders of the land back in time.
Our philosophy here is simply to make wine of uncompromised quality, using our own Estate grown fruit, from only the best years, with a strong emphasis on the elegant, savoury characteristics of great pinots.
William Grace is a small family vineyard located on the Martinborough Terrace a short stroll from the town square on New York Street.
It is very much a family affair and recognising the input of our children our name William Grace is taken from their middle names. The old windmill on our logo was on the site when we purchased the property and serves as a local landmark so we planted our vines around it to preserve its status.
Our vision is to create a unique wine by fundamental principles. High density close planted vines in our Martinborough Terrace vineyard are tended by hand and managed organically and biodynamically for low yields and concentrated fruit. Minimalist and low intervention, traditional wine making and aging in the finest French oak allows the terroir of our site to be faithfully expressed in our limited bottling.
