Description:
Our first vines were planted in 2000 on 14 hectares of gently sloping glacial terraces above Lake Dunstan, with Mount Pisa in the background. The combination of the north-east facing terraces and the warmth of the lake has given Domaine Thomson a unique terroir which enables the production of wines which are reflective of the strengths of Central Otago - delicious fruit, structure and complexity. The grapes are harvested by hand and the approach to wine making is parcellaire, with different wines coming from different parts of the vineyard. Our approach to wine making is to let the terroir speak for itself ie low intervention, reliance on natural yeast and minimal extraction. Subsequently, from 2013, we acquired several vineyards in Burgundy, notably in Gevrey-Chambertin, Saint-Aubin and Mercurey, as well as two Bourgogne AOC vineyards. The Gevrey wine is made by Gerard Quivy and the other wines are made by Armand Heitz, both vignerons are friends of the family. Their philosophy of viticulture and their approach to vinification is similar to Domaine Thomson. We are happy to present both our NZ wines and our French wines under the Domaine Thomson label, as part of our One Vision, Two Hemispheres approach to wine.
