Description:
Wairau River takes its name from the beautiful braided river on whose banks Phil and Chris Rose planted their first vines in 1978. At the top of New Zealand’s South Island, the river runs through the Wairau Valley in the temperate Marlborough region, which is framed by two ranges of hills. Marlborough’s maritime climate makes for a long growing season and the land bordering the Wairau River at the foot of the Richmond Ranges enjoys long warm days and cool nights. The Rose family were pioneers in the now prestigious Rapaura district, their foresight recognising the potential for the region’s free draining stony soil and abundantly pure artesian water. After supplying grapes for other producers for several years, Phil and Chris decided in 1991 to release a wine under their own label and so the Wairau River label was born. In 2002 a purpose built 3,500 ton winery was established on Rapaura Road, incorporating a state-of-the-art bottling line, ensuring that the highest degree of quality control was established throughout all aspects of the winemaking process. Now, after 35 years in the industry, all five children are also involved from the viticulture and winemaking side to finance, administration and the running of the very popular Wairau River restaurant. Wairau River has partners in over 25 international markets across all channels and has successfully integrated its sister brands, Turning Heads and Sunshine Bay. The flagship Wairau River wine is Sauvignon Blanc, while the rest of the portfolio comprises Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, all crafted by our talented winemaker Sam Rose. The black label Reserve range of wines consists of a Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Viognier.
