[This winery may no longer be operating.] The stony soils of our 3 Stones home block inspired our name. These stones retain heat, creating striking intensity of flavour in the grapes – a characteristic that now provides the inspiration for all the wines in the 3 Stones range. Our winemakers carefully select parcels of fruit that showcase such intense varietal characters, crafting a wine to be enjoyed with fine food, in good company.
ONE PLACE. PURE MARLBOROUGH.
Wines that reflect the purity from the place they come from.
Ara defines our philosophy. It is M?ori for pathway and captures our journey and connection with our Marlborough home. Sitting on the edge of the world Marlborough’s extreme climate can present challenges. However, our winemaking and viticulture teams embrace challenge – and use it to create intensely flavoured wines that illustrate our ‘Ara’ or path on the edge of the world.
Simon Waghorn is a winemaker. Astrolabe Wines is a winemaker label.
Astrolabe was created in 1996, and is a culmination of a winemaking career that began in 1982. All Simon’s skill and experience combine to capture the essence of Marlborough in wines of purity, focus and elegance.
Simon is fascinated by the distinctive qualities of the Awatere Valley, Wairau Valley and Kekerengu Coast sub-regions of Marlborough, whether bottled alone or when blended.
Squeezed between the mighty ocean and towering mountain of New Zealand’s South Island, Marlborough is often lashed by threating rain and wind (Atiru), which helps to build the character and resilience of the vines. Ocean breezes temper hot sunny days while the mountains provide cool nights creating wines of wonder.
Coles-owned brand.

Bouldevines wines come from a single vineyard on Marlborough’s renowned Dog Point Road. Here, on land that has been in the family for generations, owners Philip & Janey Walsh developed Bouldevines vineyard in the 1970s, supplying grapes to other winemakers. Following a serious accident that left Philip wheelchair-bound, they launched their own single-vineyard Bouldevines wines in 2005 to secure their future on their land, crafting wines that are true to the vines and sharing them with you. Growing in distinctive boulder-studded soil, these wines turn adversity to advantage. Much like Philip and Janey themselves.
[This winery may no longer be operating.] (Distributed by Wine Fusion) Butterfly is produced according to the criteria of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) which was developed to provide a ‘best practice’ model of environmental practices in the vineyard and winery; guarantee better quality assurance from the vineyard to the bottle and address consumer concerns in matters pertaining to the environment and winegrape production. Our vineyards create an environment of working alongside nature by planting blue-flowering phacelia and buckwheat amongst the vines to attract beneficial insects – the butterfly reflects this nurturing relationship. The focus in the winery is to capture the pure fruit flavours that come from the vineyard whilst adding complexity through our winemaking efforts to provide a multi-dimensional wine.
The name Catalina Sounds evolved from the majestic Catalina flying boats that played a vital role across the South pacific during and after World War II. New Zealand’s famous and largest warbird, the Catalina is a rare sight, in fact there are only a handful of these beautiful, iconic planes left in the world today, and we are lucky enough to be associated with one based right here in New Zealand. Through our sponsorship of this rare, passenger carrying, amphibious flying boat we are in some small way helping to ensure the Catalina continues to grace the skies around the stunning Marlborough Sounds and high over the vineyards in the Waihopai Valley where we have made our home.
We draw inspiration for our wines from these graceful, unique flying boats and the respect in which they are held, together with the pristine and awe inspiring environment of the Marlborough Sounds – right on our doorstep. With attention to detail, we strive for our wines to step outside the norm and show individuality and personality, garnering respect wherever they are poured, while harnessing the purity and vibrancy that Marlborough’s climate and landscape are naturally blessed with.
Churton is a small Marlborough winery, owned and operated by Sam and Mandy Weaver. Churton has been exporting its wine since 1997. Our Riesling vines are amongst the oldest in Marlborough, planted in 1981 they were some of the first vines grafted on phylloxera resistant rootstock in the area.
The original vineyard was established by Wellington engineer Rex Brooke-Taylor who took the name Framingham from his ancestral home town near Norwich, England.
Our initial releases were produced using other wineries' facilities. The first wine released under the Framingham name was a 1994 Riesling. Our winery and tasting room were built in 1997, and a specialist red wine handling facility and barrel hall was added in 2002. We produced wine from our new winery on Conders Bend Road in the Wairau Valley for the first time in 1998.
Today we are a family-owned Sogrape company, our range includes Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir, Viognier and Montepulciano. Grove Mill was established in Marlborough in 1988 by a dedicated group of local grape growers and wine enthusiasts. Their mission: to make premium quality varietal wines that fully captured and reflected the delicious and unique intensity of Marlborough grapes. To make their dream a reality a historic Malt house (The Mill), a Marlborough landmark in Grovetown, Blenheim was purchased and transformed into a 150 tonne winery. From this home and this location came the name of both the company and the signature brand; "Grove Mill".
The Company directors enticed talented winemaker, David Pearce, south to Blenheim to make the first Grove Mill wine; 530 cases of 1988 Grove Mill Marlborough Riesling. Since that time the Grove Mill brand has grown to encompass a range currently including; Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.
From the first vintage the consistent quality of the wines and their immense consumer appeal, together with national and international awards and accolades, saw local demand increase significantly. National domestic distribution was established in 1990. In 1993 Grove Mill commenced exporting to the United Kingdom and Hong Kong

Over the decades, Marlborough has risen to global prominence as New Zealand’s leading wine region, celebrated especially for its outstanding Sauvignon Blanc. Hunter’s Wines has been part of this journey from the beginning. In 1979, Jane Hunter and her late husband Ernie planted their first vineyard in the picturesque Wairau Valley, recognising the region’s potential long before it became a renowned wine powerhouse.
Since those early days, Jane has driven the company forward as owner, viticulturist, and managing director. Under her leadership, Hunter’s Wines has expanded significantly, now producing around 120,000 cases annually, with 90-95% of this exported worldwide.
Today, Hunter’s stands at the forefront of New Zealand winemaking, crafting not only exceptional Sauvignon Blanc but also outstanding sparkling wines and other unique varietals that showcase Marlborough’s diversity. Each vintage reflects our team’s unwavering commitment to quality, ensuring Hunter’s Wines continues to bring the essence and character of Marlborough to wine lovers worldwide.
In 1855 Adam Jackson bought his first blocks of land in the heart of the Marlborough region, along with what was to become known as Jacksons road. The infamous gum tree known as the ‘Grey ghost’ was planted shortly after in 1867 on the land now known as our Homestead vineyard.
Fast forward to 1990 and fifth generation Jackson, John Stichbury and his wife Jo planted the first vines on the homestead block, with their first wines released in 1991 – Jackson estate wines were born. Proceeding to go from strength to strength, taking out the coveted Sauvignon Blanc trophy at the London International wine competition in 1993.
In 2013 John and Jay Benton bought Jackson estate with the intention of maintaining the fantastic boutique wine reputation around the world. In 2016 the Benton’s started building the pinot specific winery and cellar door and opened in 2017. The ideas behind it is to keep control of the quality and focussing on hand crafted pinot noir to continue.
With Brian Massey (art director of the Hobbit trilogy) tasked with creating a concept for the building he brought the X factor with ‘collision architecture’. Based on the original 1850’s settlers huts with the juxtaposition of the burgundy coloured winery jutting out from the centre, walking inside into a contemporary and stylish tasting room.
Johanneshof Cellars was established in 1991 and is jointly owned and operated by Edel Everling a fifth generation winemaker from Ruedesheim, Rheingau, Germany and Warwick Foley from Marlborough. Both winemakers trained in the world-famous wine area of Rheingau in Germany.
The winery has a formidable reputation for its Aromatic varieties namely Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris. Edel and Warwick also produce Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Noble Late Harvest Riesling. The quality of wines produced has reflected in the many awards Johanneshof has received including Trophy for Best International Aromatic White wine – Decanter World Wine Awards 2005.
Johanneshof’s adoration for Europe’s century old wine culture led Edel and Warwick to establish New Zealand’s first underground rock cellar tunnelled into solid sandstone, 50 meters long and 20 meters deep underground. In this traditional cellar Johanneshof’s flagship wine, the Methode Traditionnelle ‘EMMI’ is fermented in its bottles and aged on its yeast lees for more than five years.
Johanneshof is one of a few New Zealand wineries which produce Grappa & Grape Brandy. Called “EDELBRAND”, the Grape Brandy is made from 100% Marlborough grapes, distilled twice like a Cognac and matured for 25 years in small Limousine oak casks.

HEARTS IN MARLBOROUGH SINCE 1980, ROOTS IN CHAMPAGNE SINCE 1684.
No.1 Family Estate is a specialist and boutique Méthode Champenoise winery founded by Adele and Daniel Le Brun. It is the only winery in New Zealand committed exclusively to producing premium Méthode Traditionelle wine. The award-winning winemaker has created wines that rival the best in the world using methods perfected over twelve generations by his family in Champagne.
The first record of a Le Brun planting vines in Champagne is in 1684. From a young age, Daniel was immersed in the family business. After studying winemaking and working at the family winery, he visited New Zealand, saw the potential and emigrated. In 1980 he planted the first grapes dedicated to sparkling wine production in Marlborough’s beautiful Wairau Valley. Daniel pioneered the specific growing techniques and production methods at that time. He saw immediately that the climate and soils of Marlborough create a Methode Traditionelle with crisp acidity that would rival Champagne.
The Opawa River formed the stony vineyard soils which are responsible for the delicious aromas and flavours in Opawa wines. Today the Opawa River is the habitat for various endangered and endemic NZ birdlife and we are committed to preserving this wetland ecosystem and its inhabitants. Opawa wines are crafted with minimal intervention.

(2008-2010) Scotchmans Hill expanded their wine labels, adding labels for wines from South Australia (Henry Frost and Estella), New Zealand (Pebble Bay and Charlotte Sound) and Mornington Peninsula (Ferryman)
Ra Nui Wines is dedicated to producing premium hand crafted wine from uniquely favoured vineyards within the Marlborough region.
We believe that “the wine is in the grape” and so we focus on the vineyard and the grape, and we grow our wine using the time honoured traditions of Sun, Soil and Passion. We are small and focused without constraint, and this allows us the hands on intensity that only a small winemaker can have.
Grapes are hand picked in the vineyard and transported direct to the winery. At the winery further hand selection takes place discarding any unwanted fruit before transferring to the press. We then further ensure that we retain all purity of texture and flavour by whole bunch pressing for all white wines in order to minimise skin contact resulting in juice with fine texture and maximum flavour. We see ourselves as “guardians” of the grape and adopt a low key non interventionist approach to our winemaking.
From day one, we’ve known that we only have so many vintages on the planet, and we want to make each one exceptional. So, while a lot of people say great winemaking begins in the vineyard, for us it begins far earlier, high in the Southern Alps. It takes months for the pure water from these snowcapped mountains to filter through braided rivers and underground aquifers before making its way to us. But when it does, it emerges crystal clear at the Rapaura Springs that run through our home vineyard. Our label depicts the rocky aquifer and the pristine springs that connect it to our land. This water is a life force that feeds our vines, while the mountain-fed rivers that shape our land influence the soils we grow our wines in.
Pure in flavour and their expression, our wines reflect our remarkable region. The purity of our springs is a daily reminder to protect our water and land, so we can continue to make every vintage count.
At the heart of Marlborough’s Wairau Valley lies the original Ribbonwood Block. Located just north of the Renwick township on Conders Bend Road, the 15 year old vines are planted on an unusual east-west direction, the resulting shade on the south side of each row produces more herbaceous fruit than other sites in Marlborough. The fruit from this vineyard, and that from carefully selected sites nearby, is essential for producing the expressive aromatic and vibrant fruit flavour components for which Ribbonwood wine has become known.
Means “five arrows” in M?ori and simultaneously honours the Rothschild family’s coat of arms (five arrows symbolising the five sons of dynasty founder Mayer Amschel Rothschild, out to conquer the world) and traditional New Zealand culture. Ideally located in the prestigious area of the Wairau Valley on the Rapaura Road, Rimapere vineyard spans 24 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc. The estate has been managed under regenerative organic viticultural practices from 2020: winter and summer cover crops of diverse species, microorganisms, nutrient cycling and the development of complex soil structures. Intended for resilient vines that will last for decades, producing true expressions of their terroir. The 2024 vintage will be fully BioGro certified.
Situated on the Orchard Vineyard we converted a fruit packing house to our winery in time for the 2009 vintage. You will find no receival bin here - our grapes are hand harvested and hand sorted across a table. Mixing the modern with the traditional, we have small stainless steel tanks among traditional Burgundian puncheons, French cuves and French oak barriques for ageing.
‘A modern take on tradition’ sums up our winemaking philosophy, making authentic wine is very important to us, as well as making the best wines we can. We try and pick grapes on ‘fruit’ days, in accordance with the biodynamic calendar, and thereafter we choose fruit days to work with these wines. We find this works with the rhythm of nature and makes better wine. We allow natural yeasts the ability to do their thing wherever possible and we use sulfur sparingly and bottle with minimal fining and filtration.
Embodying the old world philosophy of oak supporting fruit in wine we use a range of traditional oak vessels. For example, we use puncheons for our white wines and for some of our Central Otago Pinot Noir to express the floral characters of the fruit. Our wines are released when they are ready, or as the French say éleve, which means we allow the wines to mature.
Saint Clair Family Estate is owned by Neal and Judy Ibbotson, viticulture pioneers in Marlborough since 1978. Grapes were originally supplied to local wine companies; however a desire to extend the quality achieved in the vineyard through to the finished wine led to the establishment of Saint Clair Family Estate in 1994.
The Saint Clair name originates from the vineyard property, first settled by the Sinclair family. Pioneer James Sinclair built one of the first homes in Blenheim and was closely associated with the early development of the town. Over time the name of the property reverted to the original Saint Clair.
The company's mission is to create world-class wines that exceed their customers' every expectation. Neal Ibbotson combines his extensive viticultural expertise plus Marlborough’s mix of climate and soils with the talent of one of New Zealand’s leading winemaking teams, led by Hamish Clark.
From 1994 when wines from the first vintage all won medals including gold, the name Saint Clair has been synonymous with quality and its award-winning record continues today.
Our aim in producing Sanctuary wines is to reflect the unique flavours the Marlborough wine region is renowned for. Sanctuary wines make a fantastic accompaniment to your favourite foods or simply to enjoy on their own.

Bridget Ennals and Steve Pellett travelled the world to find a place to put down their roots. They found that place at the top of New Zealand’s South Island, under the cool gaze of Mount Tapuae-O-Uenuku (the footprint of the rainbow) in Marlborough’s spectacular Awatere Valley.
The Awatere Valley’s sunny days and cool nights ripen grapes slowly, allowing them to develop herbaceous flavours and gooseberry tastes – distinctively different to the sauvignon produced elsewhere in Marlborough.

TerraVin is a boutique Marlborough winery with a dedicated focus on growing and making world class hillside Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.
Terra being Latin for Earth or land, our name reflects a deep emphasis on terroir.
Often there is a ‘sweet spot’ on a hillside where all of the natural and climatic elements combine to deliver a personality that becomes the signature of the vineyard. This is the essence of some of the world’s finest wines. Finding these pockets of land in Marlborough and giving them expression in wine is what makes TerraVin tick.
The TerraVin Founders were among the pioneers of hillside viticulture in Marlborough, identifying and planting several north-facing slopes that today produce grapes for some of New Zealand’s most highly rated Pinot Noir’s.
Founded in 2000 by three good friends who believed Marlborough had the potential to produce world class Pinot Noir.
Over a few glasses of great wine a plan to establish the founding Delta vineyard was hatched, and an area was carefully selected and planted with Dijon clones of Pinot Noir in 2001.
Since our creation, we have used the same carefully planning when selecting sites for our Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Merlot.
Our wines are crafted by experienced winemaker Heather Stewart, with the aim to make wines that show a true expression of their terroir, and are delicious for all to enjoy.
Autumn marks the start of the whale migration. It also marks the start of the winemaking season in our vineyard. The same atmospheric conditions that move the Tohor? (whales), help our grapes to mature slowly on the vine – leading to wines bursting with intense acidity and ripeness.
A Coles owned brand.
WE DO ONE THING AND WE DO IT WELL.
With no compromises or distractions, we pour all our winemaking knowledge and love into crafting a single Sauvignon Blanc that is consistently good, year on year. Grown and made exclusively in Marlborough, New Zealand, it’s been our pride and joy since 1992.
Wairau River takes its name from the beautiful braided river on whose banks Phil and Chris Rose planted their first vines in 1978. At the top of New Zealand’s South Island, the river runs through the Wairau Valley in the temperate Marlborough region, which is framed by two ranges of hills. Marlborough’s maritime climate makes for a long growing season and the land bordering the Wairau River at the foot of the Richmond Ranges enjoys long warm days and cool nights.
The Rose family were pioneers in the now prestigious Rapaura district, their foresight recognising the potential for the region’s free draining stony soil and abundantly pure artesian water. After supplying grapes for other producers for several years, Phil and Chris decided in 1991 to release a wine under their own label and so the Wairau River label was born.
In 2002 a purpose built 3,500 ton winery was established on Rapaura Road, incorporating a state-of-the-art bottling line, ensuring that the highest degree of quality control was established throughout all aspects of the winemaking process.
Now, after 35 years in the industry, all five children are also involved from the viticulture and winemaking side to finance, administration and the running of the very popular Wairau River restaurant. Wairau River has partners in over 25 international markets across all channels and has successfully integrated its sister brands, Turning Heads and Sunshine Bay.
The flagship Wairau River wine is Sauvignon Blanc, while the rest of the portfolio comprises Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, all crafted by our talented winemaker Sam Rose. The black label Reserve range of wines consists of a Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Viognier.
Vineyards are primarily situated on sites with moderate to low fertility with stony, sandy loam top soil overlaying deep layers of free-draining shingle. These shallow, fast draining, low fertility soils reduce vine vigour and help produce a lush, aromatic ripe wine. Where a more herbaceous style is desired, sites with greater retentive soils and moderate fertility are chosen.
Our Founder Peter Yealands was known for his irrepressible imagination, coupled with an inexhaustible energy and an unswerving passion that propelled this third generation Marlborough lad through an incredible career of leading-edge innovation across the marine, forestry and viticulture industries. He entered into a well-earned retirement in 2018.
