Greenhough is located in Hope, near Nelson at the top of New Zealand's South Island.
In late 1990, Andrew Greenhough and Jenny Wheeler moved to Nelson - from Auckland - to embark on a new challenge and way of life.
The four hectare property they bought had been established much earlier (1976) as a small vineyard and winery and it was here that the apprenticeship in viticulture and winemaking began.
In the intervening years the home property has been expanded to 11 hectares, the original plantings largely redeveloped and the winery modernised. A small block of much valued Riesling, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc vines, now over 30 years old, remains.
Over time there has been a need for growth. Rather than purchase fruit from grape growers on a contract basis, it has been the policy to establish stable, long-term relationships with selected land owners. This arrangement has provided access to varied and interesting sites together with a large measure of control in terms of the choice of planting material, vineyard layout and on-going seasonal management.
Two separate sites have been established in this way since 2000 adding a further eight hectares of vineyards.

We are a family-owned winery with 26 hectares of vineyards located in Brightwater, about 25 Km south of Nelson. Our two wine brands: Kaimira Estate (premium) and Brightside (popular) cater for all tastes and price points; our Kaimira Estate range also includes some unusual speciality wines such Semillon, Pinot Blanc and Syrah/Viognier. We are proud of our environmental credentials: as well as being fully certified organic we are carbon neutral - we measure and manage down our greenhouse gas emissions and purchase certified wind power credits to off-set those emissions we can't eliminate. We use one quarter of the water of an average winery by treating and re-using our winery waste water for irrigation. We were named Sustainable Business of the Year for the Central/Southern region in 2012 and Sustainable Vineyard of the Year in 2015 by the NZ Organic Wine Awards. Our cellar door is open week days from November to March and includes exhibitions of local art. Visit www.KaimiraWines.com for more detail.
At Mahana we produce wine from dry-grown and organically managed vineyards that produce fruit requiring no ‘extraneous’ additions. Mahana wines show no fear of falling off the edge of the world but rather sail toward the horizon searching for treasure and adventure. This adventurous spirit fits beautifully with the spectacular four-level gravity flow design of the winery building, which is as forward-thinking as the winemaking inside. It is a custom built winery made for exploration!
The winery challenges preconceived ideas as to what ‘normal’ is and where boundaries are. Mahana is at the forefront of the avant-guard of new producers in New Zealand who are rejecting the safe and ultraconservative winemaking conventions, making wines that are dynamic and thought-provoking. These are wines that dare to be different. There is an embrace of difference of quality, authenticity and the laws of terroir. Mahana wines are certified organic and vegan friendly.
Tim and Judy Finn planted their first vines at Neudorf in the late seventies, a time of rejuvenation and renaissance in the New Zealand wine industry. The vineyard is dry-farmed organically on north facing Moutere gravels, and their ethos of minimal intervention extends into the winery. Winemaker Todd Stevens continues the focus on wines with textural interest and finesse. Neudorf is regarded as one of the country's top small wineries with an enviable reputation for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Old House Vineyards is a family owned vineyard in Upper Moutere, part of the Nelson region, located in the North West of the South Island, New Zealand.
Sheltered by hills to the East, South and West, Old House Vineyards enjoys high sunshine hours and a moderating coastal climate on the unirrigated clay gravel soils of Upper Moutere.
Initially planted in 2000, the family bought the vineyard in 2014, and spent the next few years improving the vines, before making their first wines in 2017. The grapes are harvested and sorted, by hand, before being fermented and matured in French oak barrels. The aim is to be one of the best quality producers in the region, aiming at quality rather than quantity.
Everywhere on the vineyard you will see New Zealand Fantails (Maori name, Piwakawaka). These friendly little birds hop around, and sit on the wires next to you chattering, as you work in the vines. It seemed only right that they should also appear on our labels.
Ian and Jeanne Bathgate, and their two sons moved from the UK to start a new life making wine in Upper Moutere, Nelson. Ian has always been interested in wine, starting his collection when he was 18. After years of talking about it, and looking all over the world for the ‘best’ location, the decision was made to emigrate to New Zealand, and in particular the Nelson region, buying an established vineyard in Upper Moutere.
The Rimu Grove Home Vineyard was planted in 1995 and comprises 7 hectares of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris vines laid out on the gentle north facing slope of the Bronte Peninsula overlooking the Waimea Inlet. Nelson has New Zealand’s highest sunshine hours and this fact, coupled with our temperate maritime microclimate and the ancient glacial gravels of the Moutere Clays, all contribute to making this the beloved home of our 20,000 precious vines.
Sea Level is named after our home vineyard that rises from the water's edge to overlook the spectacular waterways of Nelson's Tasman Bay and Moutere Inlet.
This vineyard is close-planted on a north-east facing slope with Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Gewurztraminer. Our vision is to produce small volume, varietal wines that reflect the unique aspects of place.
In 1973 Austrian-born Hermann Seifried and his New Zealand wife Agnes first grafted vines in Nelson. Over 40 years later, and the Seifried family now farm over 200 hectares across eight sustainably accredited vineyards in the Nelson region. Wines are exported to 21 countries around the globe and all three Seifried “children” are fully involved in the family business. The Seifried family really are, pioneering family winegrowers.
St Pauli Vineyard is located on 10 hectares in the heart of Moutere, New Zealand. The rich and loamy Moutere clay supports our commitment to sustainably producing premium wine, no irrigation is needed and the vines are fertilised by grazing livestock. The long temperate season allows the grapes to develop naturally complex flavours, perfect for crafting our single vineyard wines. Wine is made and bottled locally by expert winemakers. The process is kept simple and traditional. Each vintage is unique, a true expression of work and the provenance of nature.
