Description:
The Serafino story began when Serafino (Steve) Maglieri emigrated from Sepino, Campobasso, Italy in 1964. Full of hope, the determined teenager stepped off the SS Roma carrying a single suitcase, the cash equivalent of $20 and very little English. He also brought with him his passion for grape growing and winemaking and the dream of establishing a winery of his own. Steve worked in almond orchards, vineyards and local wineries in South Australia’s McLaren Vale region, drawing on skills he acquired in Italy. In 1972, Steve established his own winery, Maglieri Wines Pty Ltd, and later went on to develop Serafino Wines in 2000. Today, with Steve’s daughter Maria Maglieri at the helm, Serafino own 300 acres of prime McLaren Vale vineyards and an impressive winery. Our Jimmy Watson Trophy winning winemaker Charles Whish joined Serafino in 2009, after working in revered regions across the USA, France, Italy and Australia. Charles introduced a new direction for Serafino, turning our attention to some exciting Italian-style wines such as Lagrein, Vermentino, Sangiovese, Pinot Grigio and Primitivo plus the Spanish variety Tempranillo, as well as classic McLaren Vale varieties. Our impressive range includes the flagship Terremoto Syrah (Italian for ‘earthquake’), icon wines Sharktooth Shiraz and Chardonnay, Serafino, Sorrento, Bellissimo and Goose Island wines. Serafino has received many accolades, including; being crowned ‘Bushing King’ for best red wine in the McLaren Vale Wine Show in 1979, 1992 and 2007, the best Shiraz at the Great Australian Wine Challenge in 1997 and the Trophy for the Best Shiraz and Red Wine of the Year at the London International Wine Challenge in 1997.
