Almost a decade ago over a big drink in a small bar late one night in Italy ...
2 mates
We decided that when we returned to Australia we would attempt to make our perfect Shiraz.
Naturally, our wives were a little skeptical. However, we convinced them with our cunning logic, if we don’t sell any of it, we can always drink it.
That’s how the 2 Mates story started and it has been an enjoyable journey ever since.
Three Dark Horses is a new, boutique winery established in the McLaren Vale area. The owners are Matt Broomhead, an energetic young winemaker, and his father Dr Alan Broomhead. Matt developed and refined his craft, first at Rosemount, and then as a winemaker at Coriole, both in McLaren Vale. Three Dark Horses developed from a desire to make refined premium red wine using locally sourced fruit. The winery is fortunate to have three excellent growers that we work with each year to ensure that the fruit is of outstanding quality.
Alpha Crucis wines are an extension of this maxim, aspiring to create the finest wines from our treasured McLaren Vale vineyards.
Handcrafted from the most exceptional parcels of fruit from only the best vintages, the wines are an expression of our dedication to producing truly outstanding and memorable wines.

Angove is committed to remaining privately owned and believes remaining in family hands enables the company to be master of its own destiny and remain true to its stated aims and is clearly focussed on building on over 125 years of winemaking excellence.
We aspire to make elegant, restrained and sophisticated wines that will complement food, as we believe that good wine should be drunk with good food (and good company!). However, the grapes we obtain and convert into wine vary greatly from vintage to vintage. In order to obtain a certain degree of consistency we process as many batches as possible separately, and later blend prior to bottling. At blending we attempt to prepare wines of unique styles. For example, The Lighthouse (Dingabledinga) is an elegant Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz wine modelled after wines such as Dom. du Trevallon. Elegance with power, not always easy to reach, however these are our aspirations.
Battle of Bosworth makes single vineyard, organically grown wines from our family vineyards located in McLaren Vale, South Australia. Battle of Bosworth was established in 2001 by Joch Bosworth and Louise Hemsley-Smith. The wines take their name from the original Battle of Bosworth, fought on Bosworth Field, Leicestershire, England in 1485. Battle of Bosworth make wines with flavour, texture, purity and balance, that best express the unique characteristics of their McLaren Vale foothills site.

As a small family wine company, we aspire to stand proud amid the world’s most coveted wines and their craftsmen, and have been fortunate to encounter some of the best the wine world has to offer. However nothing has diminished our conviction that McLaren Vale can deliver world class wines and we aim to be an emblem for the region.
Our wines are gently crafted in small quantities, with an accent on finesse and fine texture. We strive to inspire confidence and push the limits of what’s possible for McLaren Vale and Australian wine.

Brash Higgins is Brad Hickey's wine label. In 2007 Brad, a New York City sommelier, swapped his wine knife for a pair of secateurs and came to work vintage in McLaren Vale. In true Aussie tradition, his name was summarily changed to 'Brash' which provided a ready alias to work under the radar – Brash Higgins.
The eight hectare (20 acres) Nine Gums Vineyard nestles under the rolling Willunga Hills on Almond Grove Road at Willunga, Four hectares were planted in 1996 with shiraz vines (clone 1654) and three hectares were planted with the same shiraz clone cuttings in 1998. The vineyard planting was concluded towards the end of 2001 with the one acre home block.
The vineyard was initially maintained by Carlie Hayward(until she ventured to the more lucrative clime of Roxby Downs) and more recently has been meticulously managed by Tim Hunt. The partners have an occasional input into vineyard maintenance.
The now well established shiraz vines are producing fruit of a consistent character and quality.
A Cascabel is a small bell used in Spanish celebrations and is synonymous with festivity, liveliness and charm...
Cascabel Winery is located on the slopes of the Sellicks Hill Range, near Willunga, at the southern end of the world renowned wine region of McLaren Vale in South Australia.
Completely independent, small and functional, Cascabel is fully equipped and designed to handle every step of winemaking processes, from crushing the grapes to bottling the wine.
We are two qualified and experienced winemakers, Duncan Ferguson and Susana Fernandez. While we focus mainly on our own grapes, we also buy grapes from two mature and very low yielding vineyards for our Riesling and Shiraz wines.
All grapes, those from our vineyards and those brought in, are hand picked and brought to our winery, where whites are full bunch pressed, and reds go to small open fermenters, for warm ferments involving whole bunches, stalks, wild ferments, gentle plunging of the skins and many other options. To extract the right tannins we extend maceration for up to 4 weeks and while this may sacrifice fruitiness, we gain better palate structure. French oak Puncheons (500 litre barrels) are used for all reds.
Cascabel Winery is not open to the public.

Winemaker, Matthew Copping, started his wine journey in 1992 with the offer of a vintage job from the captain of his cricket team, a noted Coonawarra winemaker. Later that year, he enrolled to study Winemaking at Adelaide University. Many years, vintages and changes of scenery saw Matthew attain his degree in 2005, while he was living in Germany. Arriving back to Australia in 2006, Matthew took a job in McLaren Vale and has been there since, and finally in 2019 decided to start making his own wine. With the support and a little patience from his wife Rebecca and daughters Charlotte & Harriet, the Copping Wines label came to life.
We work with dedicated growers to produce small volumes of traditionally made single vineyard wines. Our winemaking methods include using hand plunging, gentle pressing and minimal additions to create individual wines.

Heirloom Vineyards was conceived in vintage 2000, when a young winemaking student caught the eye of a silly old wine judge. A love story ensued inspired by two vows: To preserve the best of tradition, the old world of wine and our unique old vineyards and to champion the best clones of each variety planted in the most appropriate sites embracing the principals of organic and biodynamic farming.
Seven long vintages of trial and error passed before Heirloom Vineyards could make a wine that was fine enough to pass on to future generations. That is this wine.

The Primo Estate story is an Australian journey with an Italian twist. The current range of Primo and JOSEPH wines and extra virgin olive oils is a reflection of this rich heritage.
The story begins in 1953 when Primo Grilli arrived in Australia from the Le Marche region of Italy with a vision of growing grapes in this sun soaked new land. Primo planted the family's first vineyard in 1973, just north of Adelaide around a small township called Virginia.
Primo's eldest son, Joseph, studied Oenology at South Australia's legendary Roseworthy College. Joe graduated Dux of his class in 1979 and his early experiments in double pruning, Amarone and botrytis infection in the 1980s helped to make Primo Estate one of the world's truly unique winemaking operations. The culmination of Joe's passion for winemaking is the JOSEPH range, which combines modern Australian know how with Joe's Italian winemaking heritage. As Joe says, "To introduce some rustic qualities from the old world and blend them with Australia's hi-tech skills; you can end up with some fabulous stuff, wines that are better than either of the extremes."
Since the 80s, Primo Estate has grown with the planting of new vineyards in Clarendon and McLaren Vale. In 2006 Primo Estate opened a stunning new McLaren Vale cellar door and tasting room, combining ultra modern design with Italian style, just like their wines and olive oils.
Joe has the final word, "I remain swept up by the romance of it all. More than anything else Primo Estate celebrates la dolce vita, Australian style!"
SC Pannell wines is a small, family owned winery founded 2004 by Stephen Pannell and his wife Fiona Lindquist. The winery was realised to focus on Stephen's passion for the McLaren Vale region and its ability to produce dry - grown and environmentally sustainable Shiraz and Grenache. In his capacity as Chief Red Wine Maker at Hardy’s he gained an intimate knowledge of the region’s vineyards and sub-regional differences and was able to secure exquisite parcels of old-vine Grenache and Shiraz from low yielding, dry grown fruit sources. He wanted to make wines from the region that express their sense of place and define the character and expression of McLaren Vale. To do this, he decided on using open fermentation, natural yeast and maturation in large format oak to ensure that the natural wine profile is retained.

The Serafino story began when Serafino (Steve) Maglieri emigrated from Sepino, Campobasso, Italy in 1964. Full of hope, the determined teenager stepped off the SS Roma carrying a single suitcase, the cash equivalent of $20 and very little English. He also brought with him his passion for grape growing and winemaking and the dream of establishing a winery of his own.
Steve worked in almond orchards, vineyards and local wineries in South Australia’s McLaren Vale region, drawing on skills he acquired in Italy. In 1972, Steve established his own winery, Maglieri Wines Pty Ltd, and later went on to develop Serafino Wines in 2000.

The Shaw family have over 43 years experience in the Australian Wine Industry.
Their dream was to create a vibrant family business resulting in the expansion of their vineyard holdings and winery development to provide opportunities for future generations.
Our story started in 1996 when we, the Shirvington Family (Lynne, Paul and sons Tony and Mark), purchased 16 hectares of prime land in Willunga, South Australia. After extensive researching and touring of Australia’s major wine regions, this area was chosen for its ability to consistently produce outstanding table wines of great character and quality. Willunga is just south of McLaren Vale on the Fleurieu Peninsula, an area internationally renowned for its red wine, in particular Shiraz.
In the winter of 1996, work began on the development of our first vineyard, Redwind.
Further purchases in 1997 and 2001 saw the development of two new vineyards, Kurrawyba and Manjalda, in McLaren Flat and McLaren Vale. Kurrawyba was sold in 2010.

Our family have been growing grapes in McLaren Vale since 1970 and in Italy for generations before that. Small batch wines with an Italian spirit are our specialty.
My Father Anselmo and Uncle Ferdinando Bottin, migrated to Australia with their family in 1954 from Treviso in northern Italy, where they were grape growers. Quality farming is a long and proud tradition in our family. We’ve long been suppliers to some of the bigger names in Australian wine and have typically grown traditional varieties to suit the needs of those wineries.
However, a trip to Italy in 1998 inspired us to do more. A reminder of the distinct similarities in climate and coastal influences between the Italian vineyards and those at McLaren Vale reminded us of the goal we’ve always had – to produce Australian wines with traditional Italian varieties.
After 21 years we wish to advise that Luca Vineyards has sold its vineyards, sadly bringing to an end the production of our award winning Vinrock Wines.

The Zerella Wines brand is a relative new comer to the Australian wine landscape. The Zerella family however are not, they have a long and rich history in farming and viticulture.
?In 1956 life’s daily struggles in Campania, Southern Italy, forced two poor families to turn their backs on their native land in search of a better future. Following their dreams and led by two very brave men Francesco Zuzolo and the late Ercole Zerella, the two families migrated to South Australia. They embraced all they knew; life on the land, a passion for farming, grape growing and winemaking and in doing so they laid the foundation for what would become a family’s life-long love affair with the land and more particularly the wine industry.
Zonte’s Footstep is a proudly independent Australian wine producer established in 2003. We take our vineyards and our wine, but not ourselves, too seriously.
Our grapes are sourced from our own, as well as our mates’ vineyards, from regions that produce the desired expressive, varietal characteristics of the grapes grounded by the soil they are planted in. Located in the McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek, Adelaide Hills, the Barossa and further afield.
Hence the simple, but diligent pursuit of producing wines that reflect a sense of place, style and purpose.
We have always aimed to bottle wines with personality and expression… that’s why we gave them names. Now these wines have evolved to have a face of their own!
